Helgi Rúnar Heiðarsson - tenór saxófónn / tenor saxophone Tómas Jónsson - píanó & elektróník / piano & electronics Sigmar Þór Matthíasson – kontrabassi / double bass Óskar Kjartansson – trommur / drums Aurora is a newly formed Icelandic jazz quartet put together by bassist Sigmar Matthiasson in 2014. In addition to Matthiasson on double bass, Aurora consists of Helgi R. Heidarsson on tenor saxophone, pianist Tomas Jonsson and Oskar Kjartansson on drums - all young, emerging artists on the Icelandic music scene. The members first met at The F.Í.H. School of Music and have been playing together in various settings for few years. The quartet plays original compositions by all members of the band, music filled with high energy, colorful melodies and odd-meter rhythms. The band gets its name from Iceland's signature northern lights, which are as colorful and unpredictable as Aurora's music. “It’s a pretty diversified quartet,” says Matthiasson descriptively. “I wanted to put together a band of my young colleagues from Iceland to play my music. They are all great players and the energy and chemistry in the band is very good. The real core foundation is hardcore groove, colorful melodies, instense rhythms and a little bit of avant-garde. Part of that is because Helgi and Tomas are so well-rounded and willing to go to so many places, that I can’t help but want to play my heart out with them and me and Oskar make a great rhythm duo.” Sigmar Þór Matthíasson, bass. Sigmar started playing the bass around the age of 15, studying at a local music school called Tónlistarskóli Árbæjar. Later on he studied at the FÍH Music School and graduated from there in 2012. In his last year he was offered a scholarship for his outstanding performance at the school and spent one semester as an exchange-student in Denmark, studying at The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. Today Sigmar is currently furthering his jazz studies at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, USA. Sigmar has been a very active performer on the Icelandic music scene for few years. Including Nordic folk/jazz group Silfurberg and pop/rock band Hvar er Mjallhvít?, which both have released records in Iceland. In addition, he has performed and/or recorded with many of the most in- demand pop and jazz musicians in Iceland. As well as being an active performer, Sigmar has worked as a music teacher for several years. Now resident in New York City, he is also beginning to make a name for himself out there in the big world of music by performing and recording with artists in the US. Helgi Rúnar Heiðarsson, tenor saxophone. Helgi Rúnar is an Icelandic saxophonist who graduated from the Music School of FÍH in Iceland in the year of 2012. He has recorded and performed with many Icelandic and Nordic bands mainly playing jazz and improvised music, including the Reykjavík Big Band, Samúel Jón Samúelsson Big Band, Orphic Oxtra, Blæti, Eyjafjalla Experience and Skver. Tómas Jónsson, piano/electronics. Tómas is one of the most promising young pianists in Iceland today. He graduated from The FÍH School of Music in 2012 and was nominated for the Icelandic Music Prize as the most promising jazz artist that same year. Matthiasson had his eye out for 21-year-old pianist Tomas Jonsson ever since hearing him in a student concert at F.I.H. School of Music a few years back. “I knew who he was but I had never played with him. But when I heard him he floored me. It was amazing hearing a 16-year-old playing with such intensity. Plus he has a deep understanding of the blues,” says Matthiasson. Tómas is one of the most sought-after keyboard players in Iceland in the field of pop, blues and jazz music and has played with bands like Ásgeir Trausti, ADHD, Hjálmar and Fjallabræður. Óskar Kjartansson, drums. Drummer Oskar Kjartansson is the final puzzle to the piece: “Oskar and I have a closely formed musical relationship, where we know one another’s time and feel very well,” Matthiasson says. “I love his combination of traditional and free jazz playing.” Óskar started playing drums when he was 12 years old but lost interest for a few years and it wasn't until he discovered jazz that he really started to be interested in playing music. When he was eighteen years old he started his studies in the FÍH Music School and graduated in the spring of 2013, by playing a concert with his compositions and arrangements. Óskar mostly plays jazz orientated music but also all kinds of diverse music, for example his balkan big band Orphic Oxtra, which has released two albums. www.facebook.com/auroraquartet www.soundcloud.com/auroraquartet www.facebook.com/sigmarmatthiasson www.sigmarmatthiasson.com - Coming Soon! /// Hljómsveitin Aurora kemur fram á tónleikum í Mengi fimmtudagskvöldið 25.júní næstkomandi. A solo performance of new songs recorded recently with producer/collaborator Sandro Perri. There will be loops and some falsetto. Mark Andrew Hamilton is Woodpigeon, a Canadian-born and based performer specializing in acoustic loops and self-harmonizing. Woodpigeon solo appeared at the 2012 Airwaves Festival and Hamilton is also a proud and happy member of EMBASSYLIGHTS alongside Benni Hemm Hemm (who made their Airwaves debut in 2014). Woodpigeon was coined in 2005 to shelter a revolving cast of Mark Hamilton’s musician comrades as they coalesced around his first songs. Since then, five full-length albums and at least a dozen other recordings have been released into the wild under the Woodpigeon banner. Hamilton, sometimes with guests but often alone, has toured Europe and North America alongside several artists (including Withered Hand, Jose Gonzalez, Iron & Wine, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, and Calexico), and been on the bill at a few festivals (Sled Island, The End of the Road, Haldern Pop, Field Day, Pop Montreal). The Woodpigeon entity has been involved in theatrical, cinematic, and performance events and featured on productions by many purveyors of fine musical exposure (CBC Radio, BBC, Radio France, Le Blogotheque, Black Cab Sessions, Bandstand Busking, Southern Souls, XFM and more). In 2010, Woodpigeon completed its first residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. While all of this has been wonderful, Hamilton wishes with all his heart that Woodpigeon could have had a Peel Session. Woodpigeon varð til árið 2005 til að halda utan um síbreytilegan hóp tónlistarmanna sem Mark Hamilton starfaði með og komu saman í kringum fyrstu lögin hans. Síðan þá hafa komið út fimm plötur í fullri lengd og a.m.k. tólf aðrar upptökur hafa sloppið út í óvissuna undir merkjum Woodpigeon. Hamilton hefur ferðast og spilað víða um Evrópu og Norður Ameríku, stundum einn en oft með gesti með sér og komið fram með fjölmörgu listafólki (þar á meðal Withered Hand, Jose Gonzalez, Iron & Wine, Grizzly Bear, Broken Social Scene, and Calexico) og verið á dagskrá nokkurra hátíða (s.s. Árið 2010 kláraði Woodpigeon sitt fyrsta listamannaseturs tímabil hjá banff Centre for the Arts. The bands Brumes and Just Another Snake Cult will unfurl their respective soundscapes for your listening pleasure. BRUMES Brumes hails from Portland, Oregon. Expanded from a solo performance project, Brumes has evolved into a trio taking the original ambient, experimental songs evolving into an orchestrated atmospheric affair. Dalton Long and Desireè Rousseau are ending their summer tour in Reykjavik and will be joined by special guest Þórir Bogason on keys. "Soundings in Fathoms is 7 compositions that float among expertly, full of warmth and soaring vocals. They're pieces that slowly open, expand, pass along something wise or hard to express and then disappear" JUST ANOTHER SNAKE CULT Just Another Snake Cult is an eclectic, lo-fi, psychedelic pop project. It was formed by multi-instrumentalist Þórir Bogason shortly after moving from California to Reykjavík as an outlet for his bedroom recording experiments. The first album was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards, and the second, most recent album won a Kraumur Award. The live incarnation of the band has taken quite a few forms, but in the last couple years it has settled on Þórir playing a smorgasbord of instruments, augmented by computer processing and playback, accompanied by Helga Jónsdóttir on cello+synthesizer and often Pétur Eggertsson on violin. JUST ANOTHER SNAKE CULT Just Another Snake Cult er fjölbreytt, lo-fi, "sækadelik" popp verkefni. Það var mótað af fjöl-hljóðfæraleikaranum Þóri Bogasyni stuttu eftir að hann flutti til Reykjavíkur eftir dvöl sína í Kaliforníu og þjónaði sem útrás fyrir þeim tilraunum við upptökulistina sem hann stundaði í svefnherbergi sínu. Holdgerving hljómsveitarinnar hefur tekið margvíslegar myndir, en síðustu ár hefur það tekið bólfestu með Þóri að spila á aragrúa hljóðfæra, sem hafa svo fengið liðsauka frá tölvuvinnslu og upptökum, auk þess að Helga Jónsdóttir hefur spilað á selló og hljómborð og Pétur Eggertsson oft spilað með á fiðlu.

JAMES WALLACE James Wallace makes a pilgrimage inward to his solo electric core. He sings the songs of the Naked Light over a warm, cacophonous hum of delta-style guitar picking and the occasional Rhodes piano, noisemakers, rotary phone receiver and analog drum machines. This arrangement carves more room for his earnest voice and bloodshot conviction like an angel on edge of the ninth cloud, caught murmuring dry statements about teleportation and the fate of the human race. The result is wider, the songs expanding in unexpected ways, stripped down, but larger than life. For a man that loves space as much as he does, it seems only right and natural to get out there alone. jwatnl.com/contact.html A band performance from Music City Roots in Nashville: https://youtu.be/xtK8tE-a_TI?t=4m9s Music video - To the river http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzkIS4EumkU&list=UURhyjsfB0O8ZbikczGqnifw A solo video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n46hCJBXVUk Stream of James´s last album: http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/av/2013/04/album-stream-james-wallace-the-naked-light---more.html TEITUR MAGNÚSSON Ojba Rasta's singer/guitarist Teitur Magnússon released his long-awaited solo debut, titled '27', last December. Úsland is a record label owned by the band, The Heavy Experience. Since October 2012, Úsland has organized a monthly release of improvised musical compositions. More than 30 musicians from 5 countries have already performed on the label’s 7 records. No rehearsals take place. Nothing is previously decided. No instructions given. Nothing. The musicians are gathered together into a studio and given a green light. The results are kept untouched and released as they happened. The musicians span the entire spectrum, some have gone through immense training and others have had no training at all. Years of experience to no experience at all. Together they tread the path of improvisation, forming a connection wherein the music starts flowing. For roughly an hour the group performs together for the first time. The participants in Úsland´s 5th release will now be rendezvousing for an improvisation session at ours. They are the following musicians: Albert Finnbogason Óskar Kjartansson Höskuldur Eiríksson Pétur Ben http://uslandrecords.bandcamp.com/album/5 http://uslandrecords.bandcamp.com/ http://uslandrecords.tumblr.com/ Entrance fee is 2000 kr /// Úsland útgáfa er útgáfu merki í eign hljómsveitarinnar The Heavy Experience. Belgian Reedist Joachim Badenhorst's work ranges from solo improvisation, collaborative encounter and project with John Butcher and Paul Lytton, to compositions for his septet Carate Urio Orchestra and the Icelandic based group Mógil. After years of academic training, he has since, and continues to, divided his time drifting between Belgium and different cities in the US and Europe. Now, Joachim is delving into a re-imagination of the boundaries between improvisation and composition, of abstract sound explorations and harmonic passage, and continues to attempt at a more intimate and site-specific aesthetic language that can resonate with different audiences. Since three years ago, he started the label KLEIN through which he began to engage himself in visual conceptions and self-made releases and objects. Joachim has released the solo records `The Jungle He Told Me` (Smeraldina Rima LP, 2012), `Forest//Mori` (KLEIN, cd 2014) and is currently working on a solo casette release for the French Santé Loisirs label. Joachim has performed solo at the Molde Jazz Festival (Norway), Taktlos Festival (Switzerland), Brussels Jazz Festival (Belgium), Orleans Jazz Festival (France), Bimhuis (Netherlands), Brand! Festival (Belgium), house shows in New York and Chicago and did a solo tour in China and Japan in 2014. This will be Joachim`s solo debut in Iceland. Arnljótur is a musician born and raised in Reykjavík. Since a child, he has studied music and art as well as being quite fascinated by chess and science. In between playing with his reggae band, Ojba Rasta, he does projects with various people linked to improvisation and innovation. He has released the albums Listauki (2008), Línur (2014) and Til einskis (2015). At the event, Arnljótur will play new upbeat electronic music mixed with older material. Entrance fee 2000 kr // Belgíski blásturshljóðfæraleikarinn Joachim Badenhorst gerir tónlist af margvíslegum toga. Þessa stundina einbeitir Joachim sér í þróun náins hljóðheims, og vinnur staðbundið fyrir áhorfendur á hverjum tónleikum fyrir sig. Fyrir þremur árum stofnaði hann plötuútgáfu, KLEIN, sem hann notar sem vettvang fyrir sjónrænar hugmyndir og eigin útgáfum.
