Thor (aka Sanasol, Flow machine, OZ Artists) has been a leading figure in Icelandic club culture since the late eighties. He got to know the wonders of hip hop and electronic music through break-dancing and soon moved on to become a DJ. In 1989 he became the Icelandic “DMC DJ champion” and quickly became one of the most respected DJs in Reykjavik, hosting some of the most legendary underground club nights the city has seen and doing his own radio show called “The B-Side”. In the early nineties Thor and his techno partner Biogen formed the legendary hardcore rave band Ajax, which was to become one of Iceland’s first electronic bands ever to reach international success. Later Thor started producing electro and techno, inspired by the great music coming from the fast growing German electronic scene. Through the years, Thor has had a number of releases and remixes, and has featured on more than 60 compilations worldwide. Thor has had many successful collaborations with artists such as Björk, Goldie, Pascal F.E.O.S., Tim Taylor, Exos and Yagya. In addition, Thor has remixed the works of Sigur Rós, Gus Gus and many more. Thor owns and runs the Icelandic record labels Thule Records and its numerous sublabels.
Wesen (or ₩€$€₦) are duo Júlía Hermannsdóttir and Loji Höskuldsson. They started working together in 2004 under the name We Pained the Walls. After taking a few years off to work on other projects (Sudden Weather Change & Oyama to name just two) they’ve reunited in the last couple of years to once again step outside their comfort zone and make a new album under the new name Wesen. Wesen play catchy experimental electronic pop music and their live performance style is straightforward but striking, making use of both playback and live buildup.
Dream Wife started out as a fantasy… literally. Icelandic singer Rakel and British musicians Alice and Bella played their first show as part of a performance project at art school in Brighton. Stuck in dreams of 90’s club kid nostalgia they continue on making music, embracing their love for edgy pop. Dream Wife name David Lynch’s women as a big influence; “powerful and seriously fucked up”. They play with the aesthetics of the 1960’s ye-ye girls movement, along with current influences such as Sleigh Bells, Le Tigre and Grimes. Dream Wife ooze with girl power; infecting the crowd with their trademark “poolside pop with a bite.” The music juxtaposes simple pop hooks, beats, cutting riffs and dreamy vocals. As a collaboration with a gang of art school friends the world of Dream Wife is brought to life with vibrant live shows, pastel mania and flying pompoms. Join the gang, let’s dance till dawn.
Tonik Ensemble is the musical output of Icelander Anton Kaldal Ágústsson. Exploring the vast expanse of the electronic spectrum the soundscape is a mix of electronics and the more organic live instruments. It is a strong signature sound of contrasts: rich and stripped bare, minimalist but intricate, finely crafted and yet very instinctive. Together with an ever-evolving cast of talented collaborators, the output is a deep, atmospheric yet soulful pseudo-techno.
Cheddy Carter remains skeptical about the artist’s bio, and is convinced that no man has ever been left more informed or more entertained after having been exposed to one. Cheddy Carter does not intend to ‘grab you with the first paragraph’ as recommended by diverse online guides, and is, in fact, against any kind of ‘grabbing’ or ‘groping’, and has never ‘grabbed’ nor ‘groped’ anyone in the past and does not intend to ‘grab’ or ‘grope’ anyone in the future. Cheddy Carter does not ‘sound like anyone’ and does not aspire to, for if Cheddy Carter ‘sounded like anyone’ else that would make their music redundant and therefore, ultimately, superfluous; Cheddy Carter has many ‘influences’, for everything that exists does so in a great causal web. Thus, we suppose that we are influenced mainly by our immediate environment as well as the historical context which gave birth to that immediate environment. Finally, Cheddy Carter has played few gigs, received few views, sold few records, and made few dollars, but hopes to make the transition from ‘few’ into ‘some’, and eventually, from ‘some’ into ‘many’.
21 year old Lord Pusswhip has made quite the name for himself over the course of the last few years. Fusing intense, psychedelic beats with genius strokes of experimental hip-hop and rap, he has established himself as the master of Iceland’s underground hip-hop scene. It’s no wonder BBC Radio 1 presenter Huw Stephens singled him out for praise in the NME. Inspired by chopped ‘n’ screwed, horror films and pranks, Pusswhip has already produced for key figures in the international underground rap world, such as Antwon, Metro Zu and Bones, as well as playing in Brooklyn with hip-hop and punk legends Dälek and Stuart Argabright. Lately, Pusswhip’s concerts have been a mix of instrumentals and rapping – his audience at Secret Solstice danced like crazy. He intends to play mostly instrumentals at Airwaves but it is likely he will grab the mic towards the end of the set and spit a few raps. Standing tall as part of a new wave of forward-thinking producers, 2015 is already shaping up to be an exciting year for Lord Pusswhip, whose charm rests on his ability to dare to be different and to continue to push the boundaries of hip-hop, electronica and rap.
GKR’s live performances are full of energy so rarely to be found. Every show of his is different and you never know what his next move is. GKR is one of Iceland’s most passionate young acts. Everytime you go at a GKR concert, nothing else matters, just have fun go with the flow and enjoy the energy in the room. GKR’s lyrics are based on his life experiences. Most of his songs have catchy hooks with unique rap flows over hard hitting 808’s that include a combination of euphoric and melancholic melodies. From working with up and coming producers here in Iceland to working with big producers worldwide, proves GKR’s forward thinking. GKR is not afraid to be himself, he is rich of emotion and has an unattainable amount of energy when it comes to creating. He embraces the element of surprise and wants to have an big impact whenever his voice is heard.
Shades of Reykjavik is an Icelandic Hip-Hop collective that was formed in 2011. They’re a collective of rappers, producers, skaters and video directors who share similar interests in music, style and art. The group is compromised of Prins Puffin, Shaman Shawarma, Elli Grill, HB, Geimgengill, Máni and the Mogesen brothers. Since 2011 the group has released over 40 videos 24 of which are music related. With a lot of new material lined up and an album on the way, SOR is here to stay.

Þriðjudagskvöldið 17. nóvember fara fram minningartónleikar fyrir slóvakíska blaðamanninn Juraj Kušnierik sem lést síðastliðinn föstudag á Landspítalanum. Juraj var einstakur áhugamaður um íslenskt tónlistarlíf og myndaði sterk vinabönd við fjölda íslenskra tónlistarmanna og verður hans sárt saknað. Aðgangseyrir rennur óskiptur til fjölskyldu hans á þessum erfiðu tímum. Hugur okkar allra er hjá fjölskyldu og vinum hans.
A concert in the memory of Juraj Kušnierik who recently passed away in Iceland. Juraj was an extraordinary supporter of Icelandic music and through the years made many dear friends in the Icelandic music community. The proceeds of the concert will go to Jurajs family in these difficult times. Our thoughts and condolences are with all his friends and family.

Following Slovakian journalist Juraj Kušnierik’s untimely death last week, a number of performers are putting on a remembrance concert. Juraj had spent a lot of time and energy into promoting Icelandic music, and was at Iceland Airwaves when he suffered a heart attack.

Óli Dóri is a well-known advocate of new and exciting music—Icelandic and international—via his long-running radio show Straumur (tune in to X-ið 97.7 Monday nights at 23:00) and through his website, Straum.is. These two singer-songwriters may be a generation apart, and come from different musical backgrounds (rock and americana, respectively), but they are both known for putting on intimate heart-warming shows. Seeing them two together on the same night sounds like a recipe for greatness.
Kiriyama Family is a five piece electronic pop assembling hailing from various towns in the South Coast of Iceland. While some of the band’s members have been playing together since childhood and developing their soundscape since 2008 their debut album was released 2012. The self-titled album got great reviews in the Icelandic press and the single Weekends ended up being the “song of the year” on the national radio station Rás 2. It also broke a new record by sitting the longest time ever on the Rás 2 chart list. Since then there have been changes in the band with the arrival of a female singer in the group and adding one member to play live shows.
The threat from the East, DJ KGB, is here to dethrone the capitalistic swine that run the country, creating the dawn of a golden age for the proletariat. But for now, he’ll play some dance music.
Icelandic rapper Kött Grá Pje’s shows are just as good as his photos. And believe me, his photos are good (see above: he’s the one wearing pearls). Slide fucking legendary old-skool hip-hop group Forgotten Lores into the line-up (their first show in what seems like forever—WE’VE MISSED U FL!) and you have a pretty noteworthy affair. Afterwards, the honourable DJs Gísli Galdur and Benni B-Ruff will take the stage, so you can dance away all the embarrassing stuff that happened over the course of the work week.
