Tonik Ensemble is the musical output of Icelander Anton Kaldal Ágústsson. Exploring the vast expanse of the electronic spectrum the soundscape is a mix of electronics and the more organic live instruments. It is a strong signature sound of contrasts: rich and stripped bare, minimalist but intricate, finely crafted and yet very instinctive. Together with an ever-evolving cast of talented collaborators, the output is a deep, atmospheric yet soulful pseudo-techno.
In the past Sveinn has been quite shy about his songwriting. Besides playing bass in various garage bands as a teenager and being a member in a very manly men’s choir for two years he has kept a low profile. That is until now with the release of his debut album “Fyrir herra Spock, MacGyver og mig”.
His music can be described as lo-fi, folkie and melodic sounds with self-reflective lyrics about stomachaches, nephews, vulcans, cats and survival experts among other things. The songs are based up with an acoustic guitar and a voice mixed with occasional trombone, melodica, upright and electric bass, electric guitar and typewriter.
Antimony is a coldwave band from Reykjavík, Iceland made up of RX Beckett (vocals), Birgir Sigurjón Birgisson (bass) and Sigurður Angantýsson (electronics and production). Together they combine elements of early 80s synthpop, gloomy Lynchian sexuality and sci-fi horror with androgynous DIY aesthetics.
Skelkur í bringu play simple raw noise-rock/punk with catchy melodies and psychedelic freakouts. Rockabilly, punk and doom metal influences mixed with lively performance. The band uses custom stage decorations such as a homemade light show and trippy outfits. When the venue supports it they also use backdrop videos as a part of the act. The performances are dangerous but loose. The songs deal with dark fantasies, nonsense and altered states of consciousness.
Shimmering string synths and scintillating arpeggios, rumbling bass that resonates within your chest, more vocal power than any one person should have a right to possess. Sykur have come to represent the forefront of the Reykjavík Electro Pop scene, and Iceland Airwaves has long been their venue for unleashing fresh, new content.
Hailing from Iceland, Agent Fresco’s music is a reflection of this ever-changing landscape, with its overwhelming sense of freedom and vastness. This is a progressive art rock band that needs to be experienced from a few steps back to be grasped in its entirety, like a bold work of art. Even by the wide-open standards of Icelandic music Agent Fresco’s interpretation of the rock genre is unusually soulful and multi-layered, with a quicksilver rhythmic pulse and mother-of-pearl harmonies reflecting every mood colour imaginable. In the last couple of years, their iridescent, propulsive, arty and highly addictive music made the highly esteemed Reykjavik band become the favourite of a music-loving nation and an act sparking international interest.
SUMAR STELPUR is a lo-fi/rock/surf/punk band. The band was formed with the intention of making music that sounds like summer. We hope the music does. A guitardriven fullblast rock show is what you might expect from the band.
Bárujárn was founded in 2008 after members met at a industrial showcase for corrugated iron and related suplies in Hafnir city on the wind barren south coast of Iceland. The music was to represent the black sands and waves that is the heart and life of the booming Icelandic surfer culture. Determined to succeed in a world full of tears the band went on to wither in the ashes of their poorly rolled cigarettes through relentless unprofessionalism, constant poverty and petty crime. They released an EP in 2010 commonly mistaken for the crushed remnants of a grilled sandwich due to its luxurious aluminum foil wrapping. This packaging failure resulted in the frequent discarding of the EP to the trash bin at local radio stations and hence no airplay. Theraminist Hekla Magnúsdóttir quit the band in 2011 partly because of an artistic misunderstanding but mostly due to frequent sexist remarks and the general decadence of the remaining members. As of this writing their main accomplishments subsists of a failed make it or break it tour through the neighboring Farao islands, supporting local child star turned hot-shot Brandur Enni and getting to the semi finals in the unofficial battle of the bands. After years of procrastination their debut album was released in 2013. They are currently working on their second and third efforts.

The Anatomy of Frank is a five-piece band from the mountains of Virginia. Their melodies and subject matter tend toward nostalgia, intricacy, and nuance, touching on every facet of the human heart. Focusing on fingerstyle guitar work, rich harmonies, and melodies that sound like they were forgotten from childhood, the mood journeys from quiet delicacy to roaring climaxes over the course of their songs.
Sturle Dagsland consists of the norwegian brothers Sturle & Sjur Dagsland. They alternate at playing on an array of instruments and electronics, harmonically creating an expressive-progressive ever-changing soundscape dominated by Sturle’s unrestrained innovative vocals ranging from ravening ferocious screams to virtous angelic chanting. His distinctive voice, large vocal range, multilingual lyrics and unique approach to songwriting and composition won him the “Emerging Artist” award in Copenhagen in 2012, and they have toured all across the world ever since.

This series of 15 films, cinematic treasures from the long and celebrated history of Polish cinema, is part of a larger project called Ultima Thule: At the End of the World, which is a collaboration between the Polish National Film Archive and the Reykjavik Film Academy to promote greater awareness and understanding between the film cultures of Poland and Iceland. Before each screening, an expert on Polish cinema, Michał Chaciński, will provide historical context for the film. In addition to the five nights of film screenings, there will be two special events for children and teenagers: a workshop on cameraless animation and a screening of the children’s cult classic Mr. Blot’s Academy.
The opening-night film, the silent classic Strong Man, will be accompanied by the legendary Icelandic band Apparat Organ Quartet, who will be performing their live original score.
Admission to all events is open to the public and free of charge.

This workshop for children and teenagers introduces the do-it-yourself method of making short cameraless animation. The workshop is inspired by Julian Antonisz, a Polish filmmaker and inventor best known for a unique animation technique he called cameraless animation. Cameraless animation is the process of creating moving images by working directly with your hands onto motion picture film stock. The workshop may include (but isn't limited to) painting, scratching, adhering thin semi-transparent materials to the film, or various other techniques. Over a four-hour period, participants will work with the 35mm motion picture film themselves, then edit the film and screen it in the cinema.

Eitt af helstu stórvirkjum kvikmyndasögunnar, The Holy Mountain eftir chileanska leikstjórann Alejandro Jodorowsky verður sýnt í Bíó Paradís sunnudaginn 10. janúar kl.8. Myndin verður sýnd á vegum Svartra sunnudaga og ágóði af miðasölu rennur til styrktar á gerð nýjustu kvikmyndar Jodorowskys, Endless Poetry.
Jodorowsky, fæddur 1929 er goðsagnakenndur leikstjóri og kvikmyndin The Holy Mountain frá 1973 er án efa hans frægasta. Hún er mjög súrrealísk könnun á dulspeki hins vestræna heims og flokkast meira sem listaverk heldur en bíómynd og er uppfull af dulrænum táknum.
Jodorowsky, sem er úkraínskur gyðingur fæddur í Chile hefur gert fjölmargar myndir um ævina, meðal annars El Topo (1970) Santa Sangre (1989) og einnig er frægt að hann ætlaði að gera mynd úr vísindaskáldsögunni Dune sem síðar var leikstýrt af David Lynch. Fjallað er um gerð myndarinnar sem aldrei varð í frægri heimildarmynd sem nefnist Jodorowsky’s Dune.
Nú er leikstjórinn að verða níræður og er að gera sína síðustu kvikmynd sem nefnist Endless Poetry. Til þess að fjármagna þessa mynd hefur hann sett upp fjáröflun á IndieGogo þar sem velunnarar listrænna kvikmynda geta stutt við gerð hennar.
Hópur aðdáenda Jodoroskys hefur nú tekið sig saman með veglegum stuðningi frá Bíó Paradís til að sýna meistaraverkið The Holy Mountain á sunnudaginn sem hluta af kvikmyndaröðinni Svartir sunnudagar. Svartir sunnudagar eru bíókvöld með þemanu költ og klassískar myndir í Bíó Paradís undir listrænni stjórn Hugleiks Dagssonar, Sigurjóns Kjartanssonar og Sjóns.
Ágóði af aðgangseyri að myndinni rennur í fjármögnun nýjustu myndar Jodorowskys. Leikstjórinn hefur sjálfur lagt blessun sína yfir sýninguna og er Íslendingum þakklátur fyrir framlag sitt til kvikmyndalistarinnar.
The Holy Mountain verður sýnd í tveimur sölum samtímis nú á sunnudaginn kl. 20 en búast má við mikilli aðsókn kvikmyndaunnenda á þessum einstaka viðburði og mælt með að tryggja sér miða tímanlega.

Cult movie The Holy Mountain, Alejandro Jodorowsky's 1973 masterpiece will be screened at Bíó Paradís on Sunday night. Proceeds from ticket sales go to support Jodorowsky's indiegogo funding campaign for his new film, Endless Poetry.
Jodorowsky, born in 1929 is a legendary director with The Holy Mountain undoubtedly being his most famous film. It is a surreal and very symbolic fantasy film exloring the esoterisim of western culture.
Among the chilean-born directors other films are El Topo and (1970), Santa Sangre (1989) and Jodorowsky famously attempted to film Frank Herbert's 1965 science fiction novel Dune, later filmed by David Lynch. The documentary Jodorowsky's Dune focuses on this attempt.
Jodorowsky, who is now 86 years old is making his last film, Endless Poetry and has set up an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to fund the movie.
Proceeds of the screening of The Holy Mountain, which will take place in Bíó Paradís at 8 pm on Sunday, January 10th will be donated to the campaign.
The film forms part of the Svartir sunnudagar film nights at the cinema, which feature cult and classical movies on Sundays curated by author and illustrator Hugleikur Dagsson, author Sjón and writer and producer Sigurjón Kjartansson.
Jodorowsky himself has sent his blessings and thanks for the screening on Sunday. The poster for the event was designed by artist Páll Banine with the typography by professor at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, Goddur.

Þriðjudaginn 12. janúar næstkomandi verður haldið Nýsköpunarhádegi sem að þessu sinni er í samstarfi við frumkvöðlakeppnina Gulleggið. Hugmyndin að þessum fundi kviknaði út frá tölfræði niðurstöðum fyrri keppna sem sýna verulega ójafnt kynjahlutfall.
Markmið fundarins er að veita fólki innblástur og sýna fram á að það eru engar hindranir ef fólk veit hvað það vill og hvert það stefnir. Við viljum gefa þeim sem liggja á viðskiptahugmyndum auka spark rassinn til þess að koma sér af stað í þróun hugmyndarinnar. Einnig viljum við skoða það hvers vegna kynjahlutfall þátttakenda Gulleggsins hallar svo á annað kynið eins og fram hefur komið og hvetja fleiri stelpur af stað. Framtíðarsýnin er að jafna hlutfallið.

Bíó Paradís sýnir bandarísku cult-myndina The Room þann 22. janúar.
The Room er þekkt fyrir að vera ein versta mynd sem gerð hefur verið. Hún kom út árið 2003 og var sýnd við einstaklega dræmar viðtökur í Los Angeles (flestir gestir vildu fá endurgreitt áður en hálftími var liðinn) þar sem ungir kvikmyndaáhugamenn rákust á hana og sáu húmorinn í hörmungunum. Orðspor hennar dreifðist og er hún í dag orðin að einni bestu miðnæturskemmtun sem kvikmyndahúsin hafa upp á að bjóða. Þar draga áhorfendur hana sundur og saman í háði á sama tíma og þeir undra sig á því hvernig hægt er að gera svona góða vonda mynd. Myndin sjálf fjallar um Johnny, leiknum af leikstjóra, handritshöfundi og framleiðanda myndarinnar, Tommy Wiseau, og brösugt samband hans við kærustu sína, Lisu, og besta vin sinn Mark (ó hæ! Björgvin Franz Gíslason, leikari, heillaðist af költ kvikmyndum þegar hann bjó í Minneapolis. Á einni miðnætursýningunni á The Room varð hann þess heiðurs aðnjótandi að berja augum tvo aðalleikara myndarinnar, Tommy Wiseau og Greg Sestero, þar sem þeir svöruðu spurningum úr sal og árituðu varning fyrir æsta aðdáendur. Gunnar Tómas Kristófersson er kvikmyndafræðingur og doktorsnemi og stundakennari í kvikmyndafræði við Háskóla Íslands. Hann hefur sérstakan áhuga á költmyndum og sér í lagi The Room og skrifaði MA ritgerð um költmyndir ásamt því að kenna námskeið um þær við HÍ haustið 2015.
Björgvin og Gunnar Tómas hafa áður stjórnað þátttökusýningum á The Room, bæði í Háskóla Íslands og Háskólanum á Akureyri og munu meðal annars kenna áhorfendum hvað felst í “lifandi” þáttöku kvikmyndinarinnar ásamt því að útskýra í stuttu máli hvað það er sem gerir The Room að költi þar sem velt verður vöngum yfir því hvað í ósköpunum Tommy Wiseau sé.
