Gamla bíó

Skelkur i bringu

Skelkur í bringu play simple raw noise-rock/punk with catchy melodies and psychedelic freakouts. Rockabilly, punk and doom metal influences mixed with lively performance. The band uses custom stage decorations such as a homemade light show and trippy outfits. When the venue supports it they also use backdrop videos as a part of the act. The performances are dangerous but loose. The songs deal with dark fantasies, nonsense and alterded states of consciousness.

Ens c3 admi

Ensími was formed in 1996. After their first demo recording got into the hands of the label A&R, they got offered a recording contract without even playing a single gig. Ensími’s first album, ‘Kafbátamúsík’ made a big splash in the music scene in 1998 earning them 2 Icelandic Music Awards for best new act and song of the year. Ensími’s first real live performance was for the music documentary film and festival “Pop in Reykjavik”. They were also one of the few acts performing at the first Iceland Airwaves Festival. ‘Kafbátamúsík’ is considered one of the best albums ever released in Iceland to this day. Ensími got an offer to work with the legend, Steve Albini for their next album. The band locked themselves in a rehearsal space and banged out an album’s worth of songs just in time for Steve’s arrival. The second album, ‘BMX’ was released in 1999. It was a schizophrenic blend of rock songs that Albini recorded and the style of electro rock Ensími introduced on the first album. Ensími decided to leave their label and for the third and self-titled album the band set up their own studio and recorded the album themselves. The album Ensími was released in 2002. In 2010 Ensími emerged with a new album entitled ‘Gæludýr’, which got much critical acclaim. Apart from Ensími, all of the band members were actively working with many of Iceland’s premier talents until spring 2015 when they released their latest album ‘Herðubreið’.

Those aspects are the core of the band’s mission: to harness the chaos, energy, absurdity and fun that is Æla.

SMURJÓN - Airwaves

Gamla bíó

Smurjion

The basic idea of SMURJÓN is to go on an musical expedition with endless curiosity but rusted and worn out gear likely to break down halfway. Anticipating that situation, SMURJÓN and his travelling companions (including his screaming daughters, his constantly pregnant fiance, a few enthusiastic youngsters and some of his old and most loyal friends) are equipped with repairing tools of a various kind: one Ak-47 bass guitar, an 12.000 volt electric guitar, a lot of solid hardware percussion, two shimmering Alcan aluminum trumpets, a priceless handmade titanium trombone, one deepthroat barytone saxophone, four custom built TV synthesizers and a gold coated theremin. SMURJÓN himself constantly reports the expedition’s status through his antiquated CB-microphone. The microphone is connected to a short wave transmitter.

Berndsen - Airwaves

Gamla bíó

Berndsen

Red-bearded pop auteur Berndsen mines the 1980s for inspiration, retro music. Synth bass, programmed drums, guitar solos, retro-futurist aesthetics and dramatic vocals make for an intoxicating, atmospheric, analogue-feeling sound, reminiscent of everything from Michael Jackson to Kraftwerk to The Eurythmics to fellow revivalists like Glass Candy, Dreamtrak and Chromeo. Infinite amounts of fun live. All produced by his twin brother Hermigervill.

New York singer-songwriter Vérité grew up in a musical household where she was endlessly encouraged by her Latin-rock musician father and addicted to alternative radio. She now makes spatially-aware indie-pop that has, quite rightly, drawn huge praise from bloggers, writers and even actual real people on Twitter. Last October’s Echo EP – recorded with producer Elliot Jacobson – was a captivating collection of tracks that were raw and emotional while remaining graceful and confident. Her live shows are energtic and immersive, vulnerable and honest – but always full of big pop hooks. Miss this and you’ve missed out.

Gamla bíó

Sisy ey

Icelandic band Sisy Ey (pronounced See See Ay) was founded in 2011.The idea was to get the three sisters, Elin, Elisabet and Sigga to sing live house music which would serve not only the exquisite combination of their beautiful voices into new and exciting territory, but would also showcase their abilities in a different context as all have more acoustic-driven music careers. After spending considerable time searching for “the one” to work with, the missing link was found in producer and DJ, Oculus. Together they have managed to create something very unique and special. The bands main focus is live performance as this is the best environment to experience their one-of-a-kind talent, together with the intense energy of the music. Although the musical journey of Sisy Ey has just begun, the band is already receiving an impressive amount of attention for its music and performances. Sisy Ey´s first single, Ain’t got nobody, has been extremely well received in Iceland and elsewhere.

Kælan Mikla - Airwaves

Gamla bíó

Mus kaelan mikla picture by orange ear

Kælan Mikla is a three-piece poetry-punk band from Reykjavík that is becoming darker and more refined, delving into the no-wave genre and adding more instruments to their sound. The band consists of three close friends that perform original poetry any way they please, breathing a fresh breeze of avant-garde into the Icelandic music scene. The band was formed after winning first place in a poetry slam competition held by the Reykjavík City Library in January 2013. They have since made the local festival circuit, as well as gone on European tours of their own. Kælan Mikla’s style is best characterised by a dark melancholic sound, filled with heavy thumping bass, loud drums, melodic synth segments, and mercurial vocals that go from spoken poetry to full-on screams. Their lyrics focus on topics such as inner turmoil, and their stage presence is at times intimidating to newcomers, but brings regulars into an introspective and melancholic trance.

Anna B Savage - Airwaves

Gamla bíó

Anna b savage

Anna B Savage is a London singer-songwriter and musician. Her songs are stark, skeletal paintings of moods and reflection, using a palette of mainly voice and guitar. They are candid if not entirely confessional, feeling like a window into an eloquent yet unflinchingly written diary – snapshots of experience suffused with a raw, unresolved nerve. Most prominent is her voice – strong and sonorous, yet with a vulnerability that feels as if it is in the same room with you. Her debut EP, released May 2015, consists of four tracks, titled simply I-IV. Individually evocative, they form a concise yet audacious body of work providing an insight to a unique and uncompromising artist.

Mugison

Music pick mugison by hvalreki

There’s no denying that Mugison’s got a whole lot of boogie up his sleeve. But he almost never shares it these days! Since dropping his best-selling album ‘Haglél’ (‘hailstorm’) in 2011, the Westfjords-inhabiting singer-songwriter hasn’t played nearly enough shows in Iceland— and that’s a great big  bummer. That’s why we’re extra excited that he’s coming to town to make amends. Yup, he’s promised to show up at Gama Bíó, armed with his box guitar, stamp-ready foot and, most likely, his classic flannel shirt/beard combo. In his song ‘The Pathetic Anthem’, Mugison sings, “Every performer is a preacher.” And he’s right, at least when if by “every performer” he means himself and by “preacher” he menas “person who always gives an amazing live show.” Don’t miss the rare chance to see this bluesy, growly and ultimately soulful performer take the pulpit. We know we won’t.
